This is lecture given by Ms
Humaira Masued at NUML lhr on 12 MAR 2018.
DAUD KAMAL is a Pakistani English
writer and poet. He wrote about rural life and about common man. Theme of hardworking is
very prominent in his writings. He also uses a lot of images in his writings.
This poem damp stone doorstep is
written in blank verse. It is in first person narration. He uses different
images in this poem, like cat, door, pine-tree etc.
He talks about the loss of
something. It could be the loss of generation or loss of his lover or someone
noble person. He insists in second stanza about the absence. It could be justified that he is talking about the absence of his lover or generations. But this absence
is the reason of uncertainty with writers.
He further relates his forgotten
memories with hurricane and insists that forgotten memories always hit him like
a hurricane hits remote islands. According to him it is easy to live with
things that you remember.
He insists that if you work hard and
you move further towards your destination. You will face more difficulties. But
it does not mean to stop but to tackle with things that you face.
He in lasts stanzas talks about the
brain’s cells that are dying. It means you are forgetting or leaving something
behind. He further insists that on every second one era’s ends. And if you want
to survive than you have to learn the different ways of surviving. He relates
this thing with the example of a man walking on the edge of a river. For that
man it is necessary to learn how to swim because one day he may have to swim
for surviving.
