WHO NEEDS AN OLD TREE BY RAJA CHANGEZ SULTAN

This is a lecture given by Ms Humaira Masued at NUML Lhr on 12 MAR 2018.

Raja Changez sultan is a Pakistani English writer and poet. He started writing when he was teenager. He wrote in very simple language. His writings are mostly based on universal facts. He also uses different image in his writings.

This poem who needs an old tree is all about reformation. He wants reformation in society but in a define way. He exemplifies his thoughts with the example of tree that who needs an old tree. The tree that is not providing you any fruit. The tree that even cannot provide you shade in sun light. So this tree should be replaced with new, fresh and green tree.

It can be said that he demands to think according to the time. Our ancestors have spent their life according their time. We instead of adopting their thinking should think according to modern time. Because the past thinking cannot fulfills the need of modern man.

He explores his ideas with the example of an old tree that have no leaves, that cannot provide you fruit and that cannot give shelter to even sparrow. So this tree should be replaced with new one.
He insists that one person cannot bring change in society. For replacing tree, the land owner will get help from Gardner. They may face different hurdles but soon they will get the reward.  One day their will he birds on this new tree. One day he will be happy in the shade of this new tree.
