SHUMAILA SHAFKET ALI is a Pakistani
English writer and poet.
This poem TIME PASSES AWAY is her
famous poem. This poem is written in free verse. The language used in this poem
is very simple.
In this poem she talks about the
transformation of man from past to present. She argues in this poem that a
person should learn from his past. She insists that memories of past are like a
true lover for man.
The poem is written in philosophical
tone. She talks about the conflict of past and present and she further talks
about its impact on future.
The poem begins with “time passes
away” but the memories of past, which could be the memories of childhood, love,
friendship etc remain. If someone is struggling to unify the shreds of time,
his efforts may prove as futile.
She insists that past memories of a
man remain United with him as a true love. They always have relation with the
present of a man. But the case with the present is different. Present does not want
to have relation with past. It wants itself free from past memories, which
could be the unresolved issues or unfulfilled desires.
She ends her poem by defining the
impact of past and present's conflict on future. One may have to suffer due to
this conflict. So one should have good relationship between the past memories
and present, for a bright and successful future.
